Abstract

Two-stroke engines have a very long tradition. Thanks to attractive features such as simplicity of design (no scavenging blower, no valve train), reduced space requirements, low weight (higher power density) and good vibrational comfort (double ignition frequency), they constituted a viable alternative to four-stroke engines for use in passenger cars (Fig. 4.1). In addition to coventional carburetor engines, an interesting design was e.g. the Goliath two-cylinder two-stroke engine with direct gasoline injection and loop scavenging (Fig. 4.2).
