Abstract

Engineering management focuses on making and implementing decisions and providing the operational leadership for current and emerging technologies. Both quantitative and qualitative engineering management skills are needed by manufacturing leaders, in addition to traditional fundamentals in manufacturing technologies. This paper presents results from an investigation of the engineering management programs located in Canada, Mexico, and the USA, and is the first such survey since 1990. Furthermore, the paper highlights the university programs that emphasise advanced manufacturing systems management. Survey results indicate that approximately one in six engineering management programs in North American offer a concentration in advanced manufacturing. A 'core curriculum' is proposed based on an analysis of survey responses. [Received 8 January 2010; Revised 22 June 2010; Accepted 9 December 2010]
