Abstract

Ground conditions in the schists and gneisses in the foundations of the completed Kirdjali arch dam on the Arda river, Bulgaria are described. Tectonic jointing has determined the deformational properties of five types of rock mass, three types of rock mass were delimited as likely to control sliding failure in the foundations. Quantitative assessments, including the results of plate loading tests, are given.
