Engineering characteristics of British over-consolidated clays and mudrocks, II. Mesozoic deposits

Abstract

This paper which considers Mesozoic deposits forms the second section of a three-part review of the engineering properties of British over-consolidated clays and mudrocks. The published literature contains much information concerning the composition, classification, strength, deformability, permeability and other properties of the materials. By presenting the data in a form which allows reference back to original data sources, the paper provides a ready guide to the literature on these deposits. Variations in parameter values are discussed in terms of mineralogical composition, geographical location and geological loading history. Weathering is identified as a major cause of variation. Sampling and testing methods are other sources of variation in the measured parameters. The discussion of these factors highlights the advisability, or otherwise, of adopting some of the methods and practices used. In this way the discussion is an aid to the interpretation of new test data for these argillaceous horizons; many of the conclusions are relevant to formations other than those specifically mentioned in the paper.
