Abstract
Hydrogen embrittlement affects a diverse range of steel products. This article presents fundamentals of hydrogen embrittlement resistance using four products areas where hydrogen embrittlement is part of the alloy development and selection process: high strength fasteners, austenitic alloys for hydrogen storage and transportation, pipeline steels in sour gas environments, and advanced high strength sheet steels for automotive applications. Fundamentals such as microstructure dependence, alloying effects, deformation mechanisms, testing strategies, and hydrogen trapping are described and presented with an extensive list of references.
