Abstract

An examination of British Petroleum's Forties Field development and the first Mobil/Statoil Statfjord platform, both situated in the upper North Sea. Both projects were in 400 ft to 500 ft (122 m to 152 m) of water, with a 100 ft (30 m) wave and 130 mph (240 km/h) wind design. Each utilized different structural solutions; Forties--steel and Statfjord--a concrete base, providing oil storage, with a steel deck. Construction Management is considered in detail with emphasis on organization site management, and communications. Additionally, other facets, such as planning, scheduling, estimating, and costs, as well as manpower productivity, logistics, craft training, and material control, are covered. The importance of good communications and the impact of government through controls and regulations, as well as its assistance, are also covered since projects of this size inevitably have a major impact on society. 4 figures.
