Abstract
Often applied to spatial data for decision making purposes, GIS is growing rapidly as information technologies find use in new fields. The paper discusses an alternative user interface designed using a formal mathematical model and human factors engineering. It relies on direct manipulation of icons representing spatial and temporal data layers.
