Abstract

The second law of thermodynamics is stated in the form o∫ dS = o∫ dQ/T = 0 for a thermodynamic system undergoing a cyclic, reversible process. It is shown that this makes it possible to construct a T-S diagram. The Clausius and Kelvin-Planck statements, as well as the properties of the Carnot engine and general statements about engine and refrigerator efficiencies, are deduced from the properties of the T-S diagram.
