Abstract

A new strain scanner has been built at the ISIS facility which has been specially designed for engineering measurements. The instrument uses large radial collimators to define a small measuring gauge volume. Such collimators enable large detector arrays to be employed, thus reducing measuring times. The technique of time-of-flight strain-scanning has been developed using this instrument, and examples of the type of measurements that may be made are illustrated. The current performance parameters of the instrument are outlined together with possible future improvements in both the spatial resolution and measuring times.
