Abstract
Muhsin J. al-Musawi is professor of Arabic studies at Columbia University. His recent books include Anglo-Orient (2000), The Postcolonial Arabic Novel: Debating Ambivalence (2003), Arabic Poetry: Trajectories of Modernity and Tradition (2006), Reading Iraq: Culture and Power in Conflict (2006), an edition of The Arabian Nights (2007), and The Islamic Context of the Arabian Nights (2007). He is editor of Journal of Arabic Literature and has received many awards, including the Owais Award in literary criticism, the most prestigious nongovernmental award in the Arab world.
