Abstract

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a highly prevalent disease worldwide that causes great costs in working population. Its symptoms include pain, paresthesia, numbness and, in severe cases, weakness and atrophy of the thenar muscles. The treatment choice is made according to the severity of the nerve entrapment. Conservative treatments are successful in mild to moderate CTS, whereas surgical procedure is reserved for severe and some moderate CTS cases.Chinese medicine offers several therapeutic techniques that can be effective as a conservative treatment for CTS, such as acupuncture, auriculotherapy and Tuina massage.The aim of this review is to assess the therapeutic approach to CTS of Traditional Chinese Medicine and to expose the therapeutic techniques from this medical system that could be useful for this pathology.
