Abstract
With a view to ameliorate the luminescence characteristics of Cr 3+-doped borate glasses, energy transfer to Nd 3+ was studied as a function of both dopant concentrations. Radiative and nonradiative energy transfer were observed from the emission spectra. However, radiationless decay from the 4 T 2 level within Cr 3+can hardly be overcome. Furthermore a short lifetime of the 4 F 3 2 level of Nd 3+ indicates a quantum efficiency of only 10% in this ion.
