Abstract

Battery energy storage system (BESS) is the most popular storage technology among others used with renewable energy systems. A cost-effective energy storage system has great potentials of enhancing the reliability of renewable energy systems. In this paper, a methodology for sizing of battery energy storage system (BESS) for use with small-scale wind conversion system is presented. This storage system is proposed for a 2-day backup plan due to the fluctuation of the wind energy generation at Darling site. This BESS is integrated with a 3kW wind energy system to facilitate a better match between the energy demand and supply. The sizing of the storage system is based on the load profile of the household (the rated power of the household appliances, the daily energy consumption etc.), the cycle and life span, and the technical-economic feasibility of the BESS. In addition, an overview of various small scale energy storage systems is discussed as well.
