Abstract

This paper is concerned with the factors involved in utilizing natural ventilation to the maximum extent possible in order to reduce the need for air conditioning and mechanical ventilation. It is noted that predicting a building's cyclic response is a difficult procedure, but that simple methods such as the Admittance Procedure have been developed. Thermal comfort studies have indicated the acceptability of the larger daily temperature variations associated with natural ventilation. The characteristics of possible new control systems are discussed. Characteristics and data on non-structural external solar products are listed.
