Abstract

A statistical theory has been developed for the operation of gas proportional scintillation (GPS) counters. The most important characteristics, light-gain and energy resolution, can be calculated and are in agreement with the experimentally derived values. Emphasis is put on the statistics of the number of photons caused by the drifting electrons.
