Abstract
The observed characteristics of anomalously intense OH microwave emission from our Galaxy have been explained in terms of a maser action. Various means have been proposed to pump this maser. General energetic requirements which are applicable to any pumping mechanism are considered here. Applied to the ultraviolet-pumping model, they show that the more intense OH sources would require ultraviolet intensities comparable with that provided by a large number of 0-type stars located within a few light- years of these sources and thus would make the explanation of the strong OH emission in terms of this mechanism seem unlikely
