Abstract

In this study, energy usage of domestic appliances was monitored using energy metering equipment in six selectively chosen middle-income households. The recorded data was analyzed to determine the energy usage trends as well as the leaking and real power consumption. The main aim of this research is to assess the energy profile of the domestic appliances, determine their annual energy consumption and consequently derive their Energy Efficiency Indices. Average annual standby energy of 12.56 kWh, 4.32 kWh and 29.13 kWh were obtained for refrigerator, television and washing machine respectively. The procedure was repeated after the residents of the six households were sensitized on using the electrical appliances more intelligently and efficiently. Following the application of the prescribed energy efficiency measures, average electricity savings of 0.459 kWh/day, 0.061kWh/day and 0.009 kWh/day were noted for refrigerator, television and washing machine respectively. The effect of the energy efficiency measures on the Energy Efficiency Indices was subsequently analyzed. It was found that the annual energy consumption of household washing machine and refrigerator decreased by 16.36% and 18.26% respectively on average while an average decrease of 23.18% was recorded in the on-mode power consumption of television.
