Abstract

Abstract Nowadays, refrigeration is responsible for approximately 17% of the total electricity used worldwide and around 8% of greenhouse gas emissions. Since the Kyoto Protocols, refrigerants are subject to new regulations which represents a major challenge for the refrigeration industry. Almost half of the energy used in food retail is for cold production and studies have shown that improvement can be done to reduce this part of energy consumption. In this study, the energy consumption of a supermarket refrigeration system is assessed by considering multiple parameters. The results provide recommendations for the design of a sustainable refrigerating system integrating emerging solutions.
