Abstract

An average energy and a total energy flux are estimated for active discrete auroras by using the intensity ratios of auroral emissions. They were obtained by using a multi‐channel photometer which has a narrow field of view directed to the magnetic zenith of Syowa Station, Antarctica in 1990. For the evaluation of the energy parameters, we used an intensity ratio of measured auroral emission line and band such as 844.6 nm (OI) and 670.5 nm (N2 1PG) comparing with the results of model calculations. Data analysis for active discrete auroras associated with auroral break‐up and a westward traveling surge events showed that there is rapid change of the average energy as well as the total energy flux of the precipitating auroral electrons associated with discrete arcs. A relationship between the average energy and the total energy flux of electrons showed that there is a significant consistency with the “ohmic relation” predicted for a field aligned acceleration of precipitating electrons due to the electric potential difference along the magnetic field line.
