Abstract

We consider energy optimization for incremental redundancy (IR) hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) over independent block-fading channels. We optimize the code rates in different transmission rounds to minimize the overall energy consumption of HARQ, subject to an overall packet error rate constraint. Numerical results show that the proposed IR HARQ outperforms both HARQ without combining and pure FEC without retransmission. For example, at an average channel SNR of 8dB, the energy consumption of the proposed IR combining HARQ system is reduced by 13% compared to a HARQ system without combining when the maximum number of transmissions is two.
