Abstract

We theoretically investigated the inelastic energy loss of swift nitrogen ions penetrating carbon foils. The energy loss of the molecular ions was calculated from the derived wake force where the decay of the wake oscillation and the Coulomb explosion were taken into account. We newly but simply introduced the charge-state changing rate. The results calculated show the diminished stopping power ratio and the importance of the charge-changing process.
