Abstract

The energy loss of fast channeled particles of low charge is calculated on the basis of quantumperturbation methods and some generalized sum rules. At high velocities ( v > Z 2 v 0), it is found that the only properties of the medium required in the description are Bethe's I-value and the ground-state electronic charge density. At lower velocities, more complicated information in the form of generalized dipole osciallator strengths is required. In order to obtain useful formulas for this velocity regime, simple estimates of these quantities based upon a statistical model are discussed. In both velocity regimes, the results for well-channeled particles are compared with experimental results.
