Abstract

The interaction between the surface optical mode of the lattice vibration (the surface optical phonon) and the electron beam in a slab of an NaCl-type ionic crystal is considered. An expression for the energy loss of the electron beam due to the interaction with the surface optical phonon is obtained and evaluated in detail in certain limiting cases. The results of the numerical calculations are compared with the experimental data of Boersh et al. , and it is confirmed that their observed peaks are due to the excitation of the surface optical phonon.
