Abstract

Energy loss distributions have been measured for positrons and electrons transmitted through the 0.0008 cm (1.5 mg cm −2) Be window of a Si(Li) detector in the energy range 38–56 keV. The distributions are very similar in both most probable energy loss and FWHM values. Differences in the low energy region of the measured spectra are also small and suggest that the magnitude of the backscattered fraction is independent of the projectile charge sign for this velocity region, contrary to results reported elsewhere.
