Abstract

The investigation by Z.-Q. Zhang et al. (Acta Optica Sinica 11, 193, 1991) shows that it is possible to realize soft X-ray lasing in the water window (23.3–43.8 Å) with the Na-like recombination scheme, which requires a lower pumping power at a high-power laser facility than that with other schemes. The fine-structure levels with n ≤ 15 and l ≤ 6 in Na-like ions with 38 ≤ Z ≤ 45 and the probabilities for radiative transitions between these levels are calculated using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock approach. Our calculations show that the wavelengths of the anticipated laser transitions 6 f-4 d and 6 g-4 f in the Na-like ions with 38 ≤ Z ≤ 43 and 5 f-4 d and 5 g-4 f in the Na-like ions with 40 ≤ Z ≤ 45 lie in the region of the water window.
