Abstract

The rich nations will be tempted to respond to the problems caused by the greenhouse effect by throwing energy at them, the author argues. This would be not only blind but increasingly difficult, because energy supplies are peculiarly vulnerable to rises in world sea levels. Moreover these changes are likely to be sudden rather than steady and progressive, and they are already underway. Many existing energy sources probably cannot be rescued. The only sensible strategy is a crash programme of energy conservation, decommissioning equipment and installations that burn fossil fuel, with all the land use implications that follow.
