Abstract

This article was prepared as part of the Energy Forecasting Project sponsored by British Petroleum at the Science Policy Research Unit. The purpose of the study was to review the literature on the coal, petroleum and electric power industries in the People's Republic of China and to relate developments in these industries to overall economic social and political policies in China. The article is thus a summation of our present knowledge about energy sources in China. On this basis, a preliminary attempt is made to assess the implications for China's international economic and political policies in the short-term future.
