Abstract
A growing population means a growing need for energy. This growing energy demand is met by a variety of energy sources, including both non-renewable and renewable energy sources. Among all the sources, fossil fuels although a non-renewable energy source, provide the main source of energy supply to meet the prevailing energy demand. Crude oil is widely recognized as a major fossil fuel resource that is crucial in the energy sector. It is crucial to support the development of new technologies that make it easier to generate energy and maximize efficiency in order to meet global energy demands in an eco-friendly manner. An overview of energy production from petroleum crude oil and technologies for conversion is given in this chapter. A brief classification of petroleum crude oil and its suitability as an energy source are covered in the introduction section of this chapter. The technologies of petroleum crude oil processing, heavy crude oil upgrading technologies, and biotechnology-based petroleum refining are all covered in the subsequent sections.
