Abstract

Since the early 1990s, the columns of many leading newspapers and magazines, worldwide, have carried an increasing stream of articles on human-caused climate change. To combat this problem, environmentalists and energy policy makers searched for some suitable energy sources to replace, in a phased way, fossil fuel which was identified as the main source of carbon dioxide emission. As an alternative to fossil fuel, nuclear and renewable energy sources were recommended. Simultaneously, a third approach in mitigating emission through saving energy, by adopting various energy efficient measures, was also suggested. This paper critically analyses the recent developments in this initiative.
