Abstract

As a major concern of mobile network operator, unnecessary functional Base Stations (BSs) in low traffic time period will increase the operating expense (OPEX) and cause the profit reduction. The low traffic Femto Cells (FCs) can be switched off to improve Energy Efficiency (EE), the switched off FCs user can be served by neighbour BSs. This paper propose a algorithm for cell selection, which is use to switch off FCs when they are under a load threshold. The cell selection problem will turn into a problem that which kind of FC combination can obtain the highest EE. Thousands of FCs are deployed in the network, and total number of possible FC combination will be difficult to calculate. Simulated Annealing (SA) is applied in this paper to estimated the EE when different FC combination is selected. In each iteration, SA will compare each solution?s EE and gradually approach the best solution. The switched off FCs will cause weak received signal strength. Therefore, Macro Cells (MCs) need to reduce transmission power to cause less interference to FCs, but users requirement should be guaranteed. Simulation result will shows EE with different FCs combination and significant EE improvement when MCs transmission power is reduced.
