Abstract
The non-linear, one-dimensional numberical model of arterial blood flow has been used to examine the distribution of energy dissipation between viscous shear in the blood and viscous damping in the vessel wall. Neglecting additional losses due to taper and oscillatory flow, the energy dissipated in the wall was ca. 1 8 , for the femoral artery and 1 15 , for the upper thoracic aorta, of that dissipated by the blood. When the taper and oscillatory flow effects were included for the femoral artery, the energy dissipated by the blood was approximately doubled and the ratio of wall to blood dissipation halved, to 1 16 .
