Abstract

The spectrum-sensing aspect has gained importance with the advent of cognitive radio and 4G cellular system with multi-input multi-output (MIMO). It is one of the most demanding issues in both cognitive radio and 4G. Different facets of spectrum-sensing methods are studied from a cognitive radio and MIMO systems perspective. The important task of 4G system is to provide user demanding bandwidth by detecting the existence of the user in order to allocate the unused subcarrier channels to the required users. Hence, spectrum sensing is a crucial part of the 4G and 5G cellular systems. In this paper, a new spectrum-sensing method based on energy detection is proposed for Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and MIMO wireless channels. Implementation of the proposed probability of detecting a channel in use indicates that for the same values of false alarm (0.096) and SNR (5 dB), the probability of detection observed to be better in case of the MIMO (0.9763) wireless channel when compared to non-fading AWGN (0.9215) channel.
