Abstract

The energy dependence of ν p the average number of prompt neutrons per fission, has been measured over the incident neutron energy range 0·04–1·0 MeV by measuring the ratio of prompt neutrons from neutron-induced fission of 235U to those from spontaneous fission of 252Cf. It is confirmed that ν p is not a monotonically increasing function of energy below 0·6 MeV. Above 0·6 MeV, d ν p dE n = 0·14 MeV −1 and is in good agreement with the assumption that all the kinetic energy of the incident neutron appears as internal excitation of the fragments.
