Abstract

For improving the present methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiac diseases, a much better understanding of cardiac mechanoenergetics, or contractile performance and energy demand, is mandatory. We have devoted ourselves to discovering a ventricular contractility index which is as much load independent as possible and to elucidating primary determinants of cardiac oxygen consumption with a sound physiological basis.
