Abstract

Ingestion, egestion and respiration have been measured in the laboratory for newly moulted and mature males and females of the soil-dwelling Oribatid mite Steganacarus magnus (Nic.). Ingestion was measured by the use of radioactive phosphorus. Assimilation values obtained and varied between 24 and 69 per cent of the ingested energy, production varied between individuals; being least in mature females and greater in newly moulted females, males of both types showed intermediate values. The production data are interpreted in terms of the reproductive biology of this species and an energy budget is derived.
