Abstract

Smart technologies in a street lighting system play a vital role to construct healthy surroundings for business and citizens. Various countries have started implementing smart technologies in their street lights. To install a smart system the primary step is to reduce the energy consumption and running cost. Advance smart operating techniques are required for controlling, managing and communicating of street illuminance to mitigate power consumption. In urban cities, an effective solution for power consumption could be achieved by implementing smart PIR sensors with LED street lights. This integration of street lights will have an impact on energy conservation and running cost. In this paper, a PIR sensor lighting system is proposed in the campus area of Aligarh, where a primary aim was to reduce power consumption and minimize the running cost. The proposed smart methodology was implemented on 36 street lights with integrated smart PIR sensors and adaptive part-night lighting system with typical LEDs has been taken into consideration. The proposed method, traffic-aware smart PIR street lighting system in Aligarh shows the result of less power consumption by 96-97% against conventional lighting system for 6 months. Hence, these smart lighting systems are capable of governing power and cost consumption intelligently.
