Abstract

We show that the elementary models of biochemical evolutionary processes are the bases for the study of open ecological systems and macromolecular self-organisation. We deduce a biochemical analogue for the basic closed phytoplankton-zooplankton food chain. The perturbation of the Michaelis-Menten mechanism which determines the nutrient-dependent growth rate of the phytoplankton species leads to higher catastrophes for the nutrient equilibrium manifold. The umbilic models are generalizations of the equations of organization of Eigen.
