Abstract

Based on the measurement of lightning current cooperated with the rocket-triggered lightning experiment in winter, executed from 1986 through 1995, the authors have analyzed the energy absorption characteristics of gapless Metal-Oxide Surge Arresters (MOSA), assuming that they are installed on every tower of transmission line in three phases, by the EMTP The analyzed results of energy absorption for each MOSA connected in parallel showed that the ordinary 10kA class MOSA installed on every tower has a possibility to share the large winter lightning energy except some exceptional severe cases. This paper discusses the absorbed energy in line MOSA regarding to the dispersion of tower footing resistance (TFR), and the interaction between line and substation MOSA with various value of residual voltage.
