Abstract

We present LEED evidence from W(430) showing a phase transition from single-height steps to double-height steps occuring at 940 K. The transition is thought to be driven by the formation of kinks on double steps that are energetically lower compared to kinks on single-height steps. The doubling transition can be predicted in terms of a simple free energy model including step-step interactions.
