Abstract

Collisions of Cu-clusters consisting of 1000, 2000 and 3000 atoms with a kinetic energy of 10 keV on copper surfaces of (100), (110) and (111) orientation have been studied by Molecular Dynamics. Craters are formed in all cases, their shape and size depending on the surface orientation, which can be explained by simple arguments from elastic theory. On the other hand the cluster size has only little influence on the size and the shape of the rim of the crater.
