Abstract

Cystic adventitial disease is a rare cause of vascular occlusive disease that is not traditionally treated with endovascular techniques owing to poor outcomes ( 1 Paravastu S.C. Regi J.M. Turner D.R. Gaines P.A. A contemporary review of cystic adventitial disease. Vasc Endovasc Surg. 2012; 46: 5-14 Crossref PubMed Scopus (53) Google Scholar ). Cystic adventitial disease causes claudication by an accumulation of mucinous material beneath the adventitia of a blood vessel that leads to stenosis of that vessel. The popliteal artery is involved in 85% of cases, but other arteries or veins can be affected. This condition should be considered when a young patient or a patient without peripheral arterial disease risk factors presents with symptoms of peripheral arterial disease. Based on a review of the literature, it is suggested that stent placement may have a role in the treatment of cystic adventitial disease. We present a case of successful treatment with stent placement of recurrent cystic adventitial disease in a patient after repeated failure of surgical enucleation. This report was exempt from institutional review board approval.
