Abstract

Statement of the Problem: Securing of the endotracheal tube (ET) in the facial burn patient is a challenge in the intensive care setting. There have been significantly higher reports of accidental extubation due to inadequate stabilization of the ET tube in burn ICU compared with surgical ICU. Traditional ET tube ties and tape have proven to be insufficient in facial burn patients. Options for these patients have been to wire fixate the ET tube to the dentition, or in the edentulous patient circum-mandibular or transpalatal wires to avoid ET tube ties and tape. We propose an alternative, reliable, efficient, and safe method for ET tube fixation in the edentulous facial burn patients.
