Abstract

Oestrogens protect against cardiovascular disease in women;1 in men, oestrogens are produced by local tissue aromatisation of androgenic precursors from the testes and adrenal glands.2 Physiological concentrations of oestrogen have been reported to influence plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in men.3 It is unclear whether oestrogens influence vascular function in men. We studied the peripheral vasculature of a 31-year-old man, with oestrogen resistance caused by a disruptive mutation in the oestrogen-receptor gene, as previously described.
