Abstract

Endoscopy in View of a University Hospital with an Interdisciplinary Unit for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Endoscopy has become an important method in diagnostic work-up as well as therapeutic management of operative patients. The impact will even increase with modern and further developing technical improvements. For optimal patient management an endoscopic surgeon is warranted. This can only be achieved by cooperative interdisciplinary endoscopic units. In large centers and universities the interdisciplinary cooperation is requested for optimal economical use of resources, training of surgical and internal fellows, elevated quality standards, and clinical research projects and trials. Mutual respect, confidential cooperation and personal competence are absolute preconditions of a successful cooperation, as requested in the consensus paper of the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Verdauungs- und Stoffwechselkrankheiten) and the German Society for Visceral Surgery (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Viszeralchirurgie).
