Abstract

Background: The cognitive aspects of endoscopic competence encompass informed consent, endoscope and accessory design, safety, sedation, indications and complications. A structured pre-endoscopy training course has been proposed as an important component of the core GI training curriculum. However, the impact of a short training course on participants' cognitive knowledge of endoscopy remains unknown. Aim: To assess the impact of a short, structured endoscopy course incorporating didactic teaching and hands-on experience, on the cognitive knowledge of endoscopy among Canadian first-year GI trainees.
