Abstract

Since the introduction of acetylsalicylic acid in 1899 and the development of non-aspirin non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the 1960s, NSAIDs have become the most widely used medications in the world.1 It is estimated that 40 billion aspirin tablets are used every year around the world. More than 30 million people use NSAIDs each day worldwide.2,3 As with any medication, there are adverse as well as beneficial effects. NSAIDs are believed to injure the GI mucosa by inhibition of prostaglandin biosynthesis and through the uncoupling of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation.
