Abstract

Background: Peptic ulcer disease is a frequent cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). The goals of this study were to describe the utilization of endoscopic therapies instituted on bleeding ulcers, and compare their success rates among diverse gastrointestinal practices (Community, VA/Military, Academic). Methods: The Clinical Outcomes Research Initiative (CORI) database received endoscopic reports from 72 diverse practice sites in the U.S. between 2000-2004; all adult patients who underwent EGD during this time period at a CORI site for the indications of hematemesis, melena or suspected UGIB were identified.
