Abstract

Surgical papillectomy was carried out in rats and the resultant renal changes were compared with those in the contralateral kidney in which the papilla was similarly exposed but not resected.Following papillectomy, the kidney failed to grow but gross contraction and cortical scarring were not seen. Cystic dilatation of tubules, tubular atrophy and some scarring occurred in the medulla but changes in the cortex were mild and focal. The findings do not support the concept that renal cortical lesions associated with analgesic abuse in man are secondary to papillary necrosis.
