Abstract

Background: Endoscopic repair of spontaneous CSF leaks represents a technical challenge given the increased incidence of comorbid elevations in intracranial pressure (ICP). Endoscopic Laser Welding (ELW) offers a method of creating instantaneous wound repairs using a lased albumin-based soldering gel. These welds have burst strengths far exceeding normal ICP and may therefore be useful in skull base reconstruction. The goal of this study is to examine the behavior of the soldering gel in human mucosa and to report on the technical feasibility and efficacy of ELW in the closure of spontaneous CSF leaks.
