Abstract

Abstract ENDOR measurements confirm that F- and H- interstitials in CaF2: Nd3+ are in the adjacent cube and give rise to tetragonal sites. The hyperfine tensor shows a very large covalent contribution, much larger than in the case of CaF2: Ce3+. It is shown that part of the bonding can be attributed to σ and π bonding.
